  • Description:

Bienvenido N. Santos (1911-1996) was a great Filipino writer in the English language. He was a well loved person and a very inspiring teacher. He wrote literary masterpieces that depicted the lives and personal struggles of Filipinos in his own country, the Philippines, and abroad, in particular, the United States of America. Altogether, he published sixteen books: five collections of short stories (You Lovely People; Brother, My Brother; The Day The Dancers Came; Scent of Apples; Dwell In The Wilderness); five novels (Villa Magdalena; The Volcano; The Praying Man; The Man Who (Thought He) Looked Like Robert Taylor; What The Hell For You Left Your Heart In San Francisco); two collections of poems (The Wounded Stag; Distances: In Time); two autobiographies (Memory’s Fictions; Postscript To A Saintly Life); and two volumes of Letters ( 1 and 2).

The chronological presentation of facts and events, the segmentation, the authorial-third-person-point-of-view, the highlighting of pivotal moments, recurring conflicts and themes in the life of Santos, and the plot or structure of the literary biography, however, are original and entirely mine. They are the product of my own mind and my own creative process. Written for children who can read fiction and nonfiction on their own, I hope this book inspires our students, parents and teachers to discover and read on their own the original short stories, poems, novels, essays, letters and memoirs of Bienvenido N. Santos.
