Atty. Ma. Tanya Karina Lat

Biography

Tanya graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in psychology in 1995. She worked her way through law school, graduating from the University of the Philippines in 2001 with a Dean's Medal for Academic Excellence. Work and law studies notwithstanding, Tanya managed to make time for her two main passions: mooting and Bar Operations. Tanya was co-captain of the Philippine Team which won the international championship, the Foreign Minister's Award, and awards for Best Petitioner and Best Respondent Memorial in the 2000 Asia Cup International Moot Court Competition held in Tokyo, Japan. She also headed the UP Bar Operations in 1999 as Vice- President of the UP Law Student Government, and authored The Beginner's Guide to Bar Review, which has been reproduced and circulated among law schools around the country, and has paved the way for Bar Blues. After passing the Bar, Tanya worked as an associate at Villaraza and Angangco Faw Offices for more than two years before resigning in 2004 to focus on trade law and public policy practice. She is currently legal consultant on trade and tariff matters to Akbayan congressional representative Mario Joyo Aguja and the Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Fegal Services, Inc. (IDEALS), an NGO that seeks to educate the basic sectors and other NGOs on trade and globalization issues and thus strengthen their participation in policy and legislative reform. Tanya is currently teaching at the Far Eastern University Institute of Law and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Law, and has been lecturing on moot court, legal writing, and legal ethics around the Philippines. She has also been conducting training-workshops on Heroic Leadership for law students and young leaders, as she believes that the youth, particularly law students and young lawyers, have a vital role to play in the transformation of this country.
