Description

Sinawali came from the word Sawali meaning to weave. “Sawali” is a material used by the early Filipino people in building a Nipa Hut or Bahay Kubo. Using this simple material for the houses from the natural sources is as useful as using simple sticks without missing the deeper meaning and its usefulness because the Sawali itself gives an extra contribution to the world of Arnis in so many ways:

  1. The artistic criss cross design of the sawali was then adopted and became the movements of the hand (with or without the stick) which is now called the Sinawali.
  2. The Sawali which serves as the walls of the Nipa Hut provides safety to the family living in it. Same thing through in Sinawali, the Arnis practitioner can protect himself in terms of defending himself against the bad elements of the society.
  3. Sawali can be weaved by one or more person. Likewise, Sinawali can be practiced alone or with partner/s, applying any weapon for exercise purposes.
