Description
In 2010, the Heritage Conservation Society with The Urban Partnership Foundation published the first volume of Towns and Cities of the Philippines: Selected Essays on the History and Evolution of Settlements. This book has eight essays presenting the histories, built environment, and societies of Bucay, Abra; Sulipan in Apalit, Pampanga; Pila, Laguna; San Juan, Batangas; Silay City, Negros Occidental; Loon, Bohol; and Zamboanga City. The essay on San Juan was written by Architect Leon “Onie” Mayo who for this book, expanded on his published original work.
Here, he combines his personal experiences and observations to come up with a volume showing his in-depth analysis of his hometown, from its years as a visita or mission station of neighboring Rosario to its status now as a resort town. Coming from one of the Angkan families of his town, this book is special as the content is personal, intimate, and rooted. Overall, this work is an ode to San Juan, as well to all Batangueños and Batangas Province, all within the context of the town’s evolution.
