An esteemed legal scholar, Atty. Ruben F. Balane was a lecturer at the UST Faculty of Civil Law. He earned his bachelor’s degree in the humanities from Ateneo de Manila University and his juris doctorate from the University of the Philippines in 1966. He aced the Philippine Bar Exams that same year and wound up in second place overall.

He served as a lecturer at the University of the Philippines College of Law from 1970 until 2006 and as the college secretary from 1970 to 1973.

He lectured on Civil Law Review and Succession at the University of Santo Tomas and the Ateneo School of Law. He also held the J.B.L. Reyes Professorial Chair in Civil Law at University of The Philippines and was a professor of civil law at Ateneo De Manila University. He also led the Philippine Judicial Academy’s Department of Civil Law as its Chair.

In addition, the Supreme Court awarded him the Centenary Book Award.
