The fourth edition of this “Orange Book” comes more than four decades after it was first published in 1981. It has been revised and updated to take account of significant developments in the field of Social Welfare and the Social Work profession, particularly since the advent of this century. The Covid-19 pandemic offered a window of opportunity for me to revise the third edition (2008) and to incorporate material that will be useful to students and practitioners alike in their understanding of and reflection on the important role that social workers play during a crisis of national proportion.
