Description
The young man loved the sea and he loved his country. So he joined the Service and became a sailor. He was inspired by tales of idealism and heroism. He dreamed of making a difference. He believed he can contribute in his humble way. He made friends and forged brotherhood along his journey. He toiled and learned, even satisfied his love of nature and adventure. He faced the perils of the sea and the snares of the enemy. He braved wind and rain and storm as he embraced the sunshine and the gentle breeze. He was unsettled by the waves and lulled by the calm waters. He had been to distant and isolated places and mingled with the people where his duty and ship took him. And as he grew, he led more and more men, managed ever greater resources. He took on higher and higher responsibilities. He nurtured a family and established bonds with his shipmates. He had a full career with a wealth of experience and perhaps wisdom acquired. As he grew old and like all those before him, he had to retire and shed his uniform. His ardour for the service, however, did not wane. He can still teach that those who follow him may be better and their organization stronger. Now an old salt, he continues to share his wealth of experience and their distilled wisdom. He has not lost the sea in him nor his love of service. His journey continues, he yet has much to give.
